The Sheldon Haines Museum in Haines Alaska will present Muybridge in Alaska: 1868 from September 7 to October 26, 2018. Haines is in the north of traditional Tlingit territory, the people photographed by Muybridge. The Haines Sheldon Museum houses over 4,000 artifacts from Chilkat Blankets to the Eldred Rock lighthouse lens; 12,000 cataloged photographs and slides of images from the 19th century until today; and more. If you are in or around Haines this fall, please come to the show!
Through the extraordinary generosity of a private collector, we are mounting an unprecedented exhibit of original Muybridge stereograms of Alaska to travel to various museums across the state. Muybridge’s photographs are the first of Tlingit people, and of the Anglos who settled or were stationed in SE Alaska. They are among Muybridge’s earliest work. This summer will mark the 150th anniversary of the making of these historic images that capture Alaska at the dawn of a new American age.
We are pleased to announce that the Atwood Foundation has awarded us a major grant to support the creation of the exhibit. For more information, or if you would like to help, contact Marc Shaffer: 510-468-4610
