Inside Out Media makes documentaries that engage, inform and inspire through in-depth journalism, master craftsmanship, and exceptional storytelling.
Founded by Marc Shaffer in 2002, the company is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. From our base in the San Francisco Bay Area we draw from an international stable of top film professionals to meet the unique demands of each project.
Marc Shaffer’s critically acclaimed films have explored many of the cutting-edge issues of the day—from the Gulf War and medical marijuana to environmental degradation and Wall Street’s power grab. Recognized with dozens of honors, including three national Emmy Award nominations, Shaffer’s documentaries have been seen by tens of millions of viewers online, in theaters, and on such outlets as PBS, PBS Frontline, Al Jazeera and National Geographic.
Shaffer began his career at CBS News producing the programs Nightwatch with Charlie Rose, 48 Hours, Street Stories with Ed Bradley, and Eye to Eye with Connie Chung. Shaffer left CBS in 1995 to pursue his passion for documentary filmmaking, creating PBS films with the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hedrick Smith before founding Inside Out Media.
In addition to his work with Inside Out Media, Shaffer regularly collaborates as a director, writer and producer with outside production companies. He also produces films for non-profit and corporate clients, bringing to these projects a documentarian’s unwavering focus on powerful storytelling.
